What shattered this plan was more news from Kenya. Barack was in touch with his older half sister, Auma. She had been planning to visit New York, to see him for the first time. But then she called with sad news. Their younger half-brother David had been killed in a motorcycle accident—so she wouldn’t be coming, not now. David’s death reminded Barack of his mixed heritage and of his earlier quest to make a difference in the world. He soon quit his job and searched again for a meaningful position.

He believed that knowledge of the law could help him bring about real change. He wanted to learn about finance and currency, law-making, business, real estate, and banks. After his experience in Chicago, he felt ready to learn all of this—and to bring it back to Chicago and put it to work. A few months later, he was accepted to Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the most prestigious law schools in the country. Of course, Barack realized that there was a danger in taking this road to advancement.
