Of which the translator should receive his fair share, a subject discussed TEN YEARS OF TRANSLATION 47 by Ahokas*. A standard translation contract might be drawn up to ensure that the rights of the translators are respected. Work on such a project is already being undertaken in various translators' societies, and this too is mentioned by Ahokas*. An interesting system for the collection of additional royalties for authors and translators in Sweden is described by Malou Höjer*. For every book borrowed in a public library a sum is paid to the Swedish Writers' Fund.
Let us suppase, moreover, that the subject matter to be translated is of a specialized nature and that it will have to be translated from and into a number of different languages. To meet all requirements adequately every translator will have to have an intimate knowledge of the subject matter , the source language and the target language, while separate translators will usually be needed for each of the target languages. With the present lack of suitable training facilities for specialized translators the availability of persons combining all the three necessary skills for the type of job described, and for each of the language combinations, is very limited.
The translators of the categories of texts summed up here, and who all wish to be called "literary translators" in most cases, have only one thing in common that, however important it may be, has hardly any bearing on the character of the text: they all work for publishers, their pay is determined by these publishers (with a few exceptions) and some of them are even in the permanent employment of publishers. This relationship with publishers distinguishes them from the other large class of translators who also have only one similar feature in common, namely, that they do not usually work for publishers; the members of this class are irrationally referred to as scientific and technical translators.
