However, workers couldn’t arrive fast enough to meet the growing demand. The colonists tried cap- turing Native Americans and enslaving them, but they soon realized this didn’t work very well. Native Americans would escape and disappear into the forests or return to their homes, never to be found again. Also, many Native Americans quickly died from measles, smallpox, and other diseases the Europeans brought to the New World. The demand for workers grew. John Rolfe and others discovered that conditions in the New World were perfect for growing tobacco, and there was a high demand for tobacco in Europe, where it brought high prices.

The Free African Society was a church, a place to help poor people, and began giving support to African Americans and other people who believed they should be free. Groups like the Free African Society encouraged people to form other groups in cities such as Boston and New York. Churches for African Americans were started. Schools were built. African Americans formed new societies, such as the African Lodge No. 459 and the Boston African Society, to create an identity for themselves in America.

They could be bought or sold by the person who owned the contract. When the time of the contract was up, usually after a period of seven years, the indentured servants were freed. Sometimes they were given money, clothes, or small plots of land to help them settle in the community. By 1651, several of the Africans who originally landed in Jamestown had fulfilled the terms of their contracts as indentured servants and were now free. One man named Antony married another African 20 named Isabella, who had also arrived in Jamestown on the ship in 1619.
